"FILLER explores visions and responses to popular culture. Within this concept, Hans Hoekstra, Jur de Vries, and Lisa Smithson create large-scale, site-specific works on the walls of SIGN. These monumental constellations combine wall paintings, drawings, textiles, reliefs, collages, and textual elements, forming layered and critical reflections. Working from his studio in Haren, a village in the northeast of the Netherlands, Hans Hoekstra paints familiar surroundings—interiors, landscapes, and houseplants. While these subjects may seem ordinary, Hoekstra transforms them through subtle tensions and contrasts. His work balances realism and abstraction, playing with positive and negative space. A lush succulent becomes a study in shape, a meticulously painted kettle sits beside cartoonish tea glasses, and shadows cast across a table take on vibrant, unexpected hues. Through these contradictions, Hoekstra infuses quiet, everyday moments with depth, movement, and visual intrigue."
