With the exhibition, the museum pays tribute to a remarkable artist and a fascinating body of work that has played a crucial role in the development of painting and continues to influence the work of a younger generation of artists. The presentation includes a large number of paintings, drawings, gouaches, and graphic works from the period 1976 to 1987. For the first time, these works are shown together with a selection of sketches, notes, and documentation from his archives. 1987 was the year René Daniëls (Eindhoven, 1950) suffered a stroke that made it impossible for him to work for a long time. Since 2007, Daniëls has been active again as an artist, and some of his recent works are being displayed. Daniëls has also created a wall drawing specifically for this exhibition. In the central hall, the presentation "Eindhoven not Eindhoven. René Daniëls, art, and counterculture 1976-1981" can be seen, in which a connection is made with the alternative music scene of the seventies and eighties, which was a major source of inspiration for Daniëls. Many new punk, new wave, and no wave bands (such as Sex Pistols, Talking Heads, Lou Reed, The Stranglers, and Plus Instruments) performed at art and music venues like the Effenaar, de Fabriek, Apollohuis, and the Van Abbemuseum. René Daniëls' work was inspired by these new music movements. This music blared through his studio while he was working. Daniëls and his friends also frequently attended concerts and made Super 8 film recordings of bands that later became legendary. The presentation includes archival materials, photographs, and audiovisual materials, including the Super 8 films.
