text

"Nineties to Now explores the artistic freedom of the 1990s and its continued relevance in today’s digital and streaming era. By engaging with the past and envisioning its future, the exhibition highlights how artists from this period continue to shape contemporary discourse. Among the participating artists is Tim Ayres, known for his distinctive text-based paintings. Born in Hastings in 1965, Ayres studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he developed his signature typeface. His work, like that of contemporaries Ryan McGinness and Christopher Wool, deconstructs language through recontextualization and abstraction, questioning its meaning and limitations. Ayres has exhibited at institutions such as Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, PS Projectspace, and PM/AM. His work is included in collections like the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and The New York Public Library. Nineties to Now situates his practice within a broader movement, showcasing its lasting impact."
